The Arcadian

The Arcadian first started playing together as a band in 2006, with SHAH ALAM LIFE TRIBUTE (SALT) 2006 as the first ever event performed together. Formerly known as ISCA, they have recently formed this band with many of the musicians from the previous band. The Arcadian consists of female vocalist Juanita, Shaun and Rakesh on guitars, Daniel on bass, keyboardist Ian and Aaron on the drums. Ever since 2006, the band has played for many church events and also performed at several events in schools and colleges. The different taste of music among the band members proved to be one of the band’s strong points, allowing a variety of music to be played, suiting different crowds at different events. With the amount of chemistry among band mates (the “smartness” of Daniel, Shaun’s undying character, rather sacarstic facial expressionist, Rakesh, the jovial and smiley Juanita, quiet dude Ian and random drummer guy Aaron ), The Arcadian’s performance will surely grab your full attention. Rakesh the guitarist said, “We’ve come a long way since SALT 06 and we will definitely put on a good show for the fans out there”. “That’s if you have any fans”, joked Aaron, band drummer. Army of Three

Army of Three is the fastest rising band in Malaysia. This alternative rock band originally has their background as Christian musicians in church, swings to the other extreme in their musical style but not deviating from their faith and thus Army of Three means the Triune God of their faith though their band members comprises of four wacky but good nature young persons. The band members are Jeffrey, (vocals, guitar), Darren (bass, screams), Edmond (drums), and Alex (guitar, backing vocals). Known for their stage presence in total submergence of their style (a few accidental slips and falls were often deemed as part their choreography), nevertheless, this alternative rock band has every approval of parents on their music and lyric, heavy metal minus the anger, wild but never destructive. In their energetic live show, the three guitarists in their delivery often build on the metallic rock sensibilities of Jeffrey's songwriting, and, rounded out by Alex on the soaring lead, driven by hard-charging guitar and hard hitter drummer Edmond. Needless to say, Edmond the drummer is the "bear", with his physical size and hard hit he is nicknamed as teddy bear among the band members because of his softness of personality as a teddy bear.

Liang

A JACK-of-all-trades is how one can sum up R&B singer-songwriter Liang. Despite being only 28 years old, the ambitious young man has dabbled in a series of jobs ranging from managing a restaurant in Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam; a resort in Pulau Redang; and setting up a futsal court in Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur. Not bad for someone who has graduated with a degree in economics and management from the University of London.

Despite having an impressive curriculum vita, one can only wonder why Liang decided to put all things aside to pursue a singing career.

“I have always been passionate about singing. I got my first taste of music after joining the Klang Gospel Hall’s church choir as a child. While studying in a private college in Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, I joined a six-man a cappella group, Legato, that used to perform at various college functions. This fuelled my passion for singing further,” said Liang in a recent interview.

Liang’s biggest break came in 2001 when he decided to help his friend, singer Juwita Suwito, compose a song for a church’s Christmas musical. His composition proved to be a hit, which eventually led Suwito to introduce him to the “right people” in the recording industry.

“Juwita helped me get my first record deal. I was still wet behind the ears and she taught me the tricks of the trade. She was like a big sister whom I could turn to for advice,” said Liang.

In 2004, he released his debut hip hop album 8oz of Soul. The album featured a mix of retro gospel and urban R&B, with influences from classic soul and funk icons.

His first single Silver Linings quickly hit No.1 on the X-Fresh FM’s Carta 20. His two other songs – Show Me Whatcha Got and Nice Girls – secured top spots in Hitz.fm’s Met 10 in 2006 and 2007.

While his peers would prefer to stick to the pop or rock genres, Liang is focused on his own thing.

“Music is an expression of who you are, so it’s only natural to sing what you’re comfortable with. When I was a teen, my peers used to listen to Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead and I would be listening to Chris Cross and old school songs from the likes of Luther Vandross and Stevie Wonder.

“I have always enjoyed listening to R&B, hip hop and gospel music. It’s not me drifting away from a particular mode but just an expression of who I am,” said the cheerful crooner, whose full name in Tan Chung Liang.

Liang’s second album, After 8, was released under Forty Four Records last November. The 12-track album comprises nuances of R&B, hip hop with a dash of R&B ballads. It also offers two Malay tracks – Menanti Harapan (featuring Petaling Jaya Glad Tidings choir) and Seakan Aku Jatuh Cinta.

“The album is a representation of who I am as an artiste. It has a more driven sound and comprises relaxing and inspiring tunes. While the first album has influences of Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire and James Ingram to modern urban R&B artistes such as Usher, Destiny’s Child and Alicia Keys, the second is much fresher, relevant and more Chris Brown, Usher and Mario,” said Liang, who composed all the songs in the album.

The album also has collaborative efforts with home-grown rappers Hunny Madu and Trix.

“Hunny and Trix are some of the most talented artistes around. Although lesser-known talents, they are excellent singers. Some may think collaborations tend to dilute a singer’s worth, but collaborative efforts can enhance the track.

“For example, Kanye West’s Gold Digger (featuring Jamie Foxx) was a hit as it was a combination of the singers’ strengths,” said Liang, who worked with V.E.’s Damien Shorty Soul, Pop Shuvit and Nick Lee in producing the album.

When the interview was conducted last month, the singer was in the midst of working on the soundtrack for Christian New’s movie Life Is Good ... Back to School. The movie, slated for release by year-end, will see Liang making his debut appearance as a musician.

“This is my debut acting role and yes, I am excited. It’s a new experience and it should be fun working with actors like Ashraf Sinclair and Sazzy Falak.”

Patrick Leong

Patrick has been involved in the music industry since 1997, performing as a backing vocalist for major international artistes such as Taiwan Artist Wang Lee Hom, Hetty Kos'endang, Kris Dayanti and local artists Sheila Majid, Siti Nurhaliza, Innuendo, Dayang Nurfaizah, local Nasyid Group Rabanni and many others.

A significant breakthrough in his singing career occurred in 2002 when Patrick opened Pavarotti's Concert for the Asian Global Leadership Forum which was held on the 7th of September 2007 in Pangkor Laut. Soon after Patrick was led to form a Ministry that reaches out through music and testimonies.
December 9th, 2002 saw the formation of this Ministry which later in June 2003 birth the name Oops! Asia, along with Henry Lee, Juwita Suwito, Wong Yew Fui and Tina Yap as well as the release of his debut album "For Your Love" which contains a tapestry of his life experiences & faith.

Joe Loy

Joe Loy & The Warehouse Project is a One-Of-Its-Own-Kind-Of four-member band that is passionate about God and making good music! The band has been playing together for 5 years now and is actively serving in the worship team of Full Gospel Assembly KL -Youth Ministry. Besides that, the band also enjoys playing a variety of music in gigs throughout the area. Who's who: Joe Loy - Lead Vocals & Guitar, Darren Ong - Keyboard, Raymond Dinshaw - Bass, Xavier James - Drums. All The Nations is the band's debut album which features 10 original compositions that captures and embrace modern Praise & Worship for this generation.

With most of the members hailing from Klang, we describe ourselves as a “mesh of mixed blood”, with members from different backgrounds, of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Portuguese parentage and “loads of Klang”. We broke through the music scene in 2007, gaining popularity and added exposure via Battle of the Bands as grand prize winners.

The band is all about sending out positive messages to this generation. Samuel Oh, the front man of the band says, "One of the easiest ways we find our voices being heard is when we put together our talents as a group, which is also five times louder than one person standing alone."

Juwita Suwito

In 2005, Juwita’s debut solo album, ‘Brand New World’ was declared Best Local English Album at the prestigious AIM (Malaysian Music Industry) Awards. She was also nominated for Best Female Vocal Performance in an Album the same year. These were only 2 of the 4 nominations she and her album received at AIM12. Juwita's journey in the professional music scene began in her late teens as a backing vocalist for leading Malaysian artistes at gigs, mega concerts and prominent award shows. It was during this time that she developed her personal versatility and was often called upon to record song demos for East Asian publishing houses. In fact, it was demos such as these which were eventually released and unexpectedly caught the attention of many a curious listener. One example is her rendition of “Breathe Again”, published by Warner Music Taiwan in a Soundtrack for Mandarin TV drama series ‘The Outsiders’.

In July 2003, while representing Malaysia at the YWCA World Council & International Women’s Summit in Brisbane, Australia, Juwita performed a song she wrote based on the theme, ‘Leading Change’. It expressed her passion to encourage especially youth to use their unique God-given capabilities to make a difference in society. This received an enthusiastic response from the audience of approximately 1,000 women from over 100 countries.

In 2004, Juwita was entrusted with the task of coaching the finalists of the inaugural 'Malaysian Idol', and continued to do so for the second season. In the following years, she guest coached on reality shows 'One in a Million' and 'Mentor'. She was also enlisted on the LG MyStarz mentoring team consisting of Malaysia's top musicians.

Since the release of her debut solo album, Juwita has performed at numerous events, youth rallies and concerts in Peninsular & East Malaysia and Singapore. In November 2005, she had her first Australian Mini Tour during which she performed and presented an 'Angel' award at the National Gospel Music Awards in Canberra. Her second Australian Mini Tour in July 2006 was with the first Malaysian Idol Jaclyn Victor. Together they performed at Paradise Community Church in Adelaide, Australia for Christ Fellowship in Melbourne and at the Mt.Buller Ski Resort. June 2007 found Juwita at the Asia Pacific Youth Alive Conference in Jakarta, Indonesia with the Malaysian team that led a stadium-full of 5,500 young people in worship. In July 2007, she performed once again at the International Women's Summit, this time held in Nairobi, Kenya.
